HCHCR D2 Steel (High Carbon High Chromium) is a premium-grade cold work tool steel widely used in applications that demand high wear resistance, excellent hardness, and superior dimensional stability. D2 steel contains a high percentage of carbon and chromium, which provides outstanding resistance to abrasion and surface wear, making it an ideal choice for heavy-duty tooling and precision components. One of the key characteristics of HCHCR D2 Steel is its ability to retain hardness even after prolonged use under high stress conditions. It offers good compressive strength and moderate toughness, allowing tools made from D2 steel to withstand repeated impact and pressure without deformation. Due to its high chromium content, D2 steel also exhibits good resistance to corrosion compared to other high-carbon tool steels. HCHCR D2 Steel is commonly used in the manufacturing of dies, punches, shear blades, slitting cutters, press tools, blanking and forming dies, thread rolling dies, and cold extrusion tools. It is especially suitable for applications involving long production runs where tool life and consistent performance are critical. The steel’s excellent edge-holding ability makes it a preferred material for cutting and trimming tools. This steel grade offers good machinability in the annealed condition and can be heat treated to achieve high hardness levels, typically ranging between 58–62 HRC. Proper heat treatment enhances its wear resistance and ensures stable performance during operation. However, due to its hardness, careful machining practices and appropriate tooling are recommended. HCHCR D2 Steel is available in various forms such as round bars, flat bars, plates, and blocks to suit different industrial requirements. With its combination of strength, durability, and wear resistance, D2 steel is widely used in automotive, engineering, manufacturing, and tool-making industries, making it a reliable and cost-effective solution for high-performance tooling applications.
